Effect of annealing on photovoltaic properties and microstructure of conventional and inverted organic solar cells using active bilayer based on liquid-crystal semiconducting polymer and fullerene Reviewed

Conventional and inverted organic solar cells of poly[9,9-dioctyl-fluorene-co-bithiophene] (F8T2) as liquid-crystal semiconducting polymer and fullerene as electron acceptor were fabricated and characterized. An effect of thermal treatment of the films on annealing condition near glass transition was investigated for tuning optimization and improving the photovoltaic and optical properties. Annealing treatment below the glass transition improved the photovoltaic performance and carrier diffusion in crystal growth of active layer. The X-ray diffraction patterns indicate a crystalline structure with molecular order of F8T2 in crystal index, 100 as a layer distance between sheets of F8T2 chains. The photovoltaic properties were based on molecular interactions with molecular ordering in active layer at crystal state. As the photovoltaic mechanisms, the F8T2 thin film as p-type semiconducting polymer worked for electron-donor layer to support light-induced generation, carrier diffusion and charge transfer near interface in active layer.

Copper oxide (Cu O)-based heterojunction solar cells were fabricated by spin-coating and electrodeposition methods, and photovoltaic properties and microstructures were investigated. Zinc oxide (ZnO) and Cu O were used as n- and p-type semiconductors, respectively, to fabricate photovoltaic devices based on In-doped tin oxide/ZnO/Cu O/Au heterojunction structures. Short-circuit current and fill factor increased by aluminum (Al) doping in the ZnO layer, which resulted in the increase of the conversion efficiency. The efficiency was improved further by growing ZnO and Cu O layers with larger crystallite sizes, and by optimizing the Al-doping by spin coating. 2 2 2 2

The successful synthesis of highly crystallized cuprous oxide nanoparticles using long chained alcohol reduction method is reported. The purity of copper oxide obtained by this method greatly depends on the synthesis conditions such as reaction temperature, reaction duration, and hydroxyl ion concentration that assist the reduction kinetics. By optimizing the above parameters, cubic cuprous oxide with particle sizes controllable in the range of 10-30 nm were synthesized. The x-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the single-phased nature of Cu O crystal. Furthermore, the ratio between copper and oxygen atoms in the product was determined to be 1.96 using the Rietveld analysis and confirmed the purity of Cu O nanoparticles. In addition, I-V characteristics suggested that the nanoparticles function as semiconductor and indicated the use of these cuprous nanocrystals as a functional material for the preparation of solar devices. 2 2

Thin films of a C -ethylenediamine (EDA) adduct were prepared from an EDA solution of the adduct particles. An inverted-type organic thin-film solar cell using the thin film of the C -EDA adduct as a buffer layer was fabricated. Organic solar cells based on copper naphthalocyanine (CuNc) and fullerene (C ) were fabricated, and their photovoltaic properties were investigated. C and CuNc were used as n-type and p-type semiconductors, respectively. In addition, the effect of Au nanoparticle addition on a hole transfer layer was investigated, and the power conversion efficiency of the devices was improved after blending the Au nanoparticles into the hole transport layer. Nanostructures of Au nanoparticles were investigated by transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Inverted-type bulk-heterojunction organic thin-film solar cells with incorporated gold nanoparticles were fabricated and evaluated. Gold nanoparticles were incorporated into the hole-transport layer, and subsequently positioned behind the photoactive layer, away from the light-facing side of the solar cell. Incorporation of gold nanoparticles was confirmed by scanning electro microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and transmission absorption spectra. The incorporation of the gold nanoparticles improved the performance of the photovoltaic device, even gold nanoparticles were aggregated in the hole-transport layer. © 2014 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. [60]Fullerene assembly films consisting of C and 1,2-diaminoethane (ethylenediamine) were fabricated on an amino-group-modified substrate and were characterized. An inverted-type organic solar cell was fabricated using the C -assembly film as the acceptor layer in the photoactive layer of the solar cell. The resultant photoelectric conversion performances of the solar cells were studied using the photocurrent and photovoltage via the photoexcitation of polythiophene. Controlling the energy levels of the C -assembly film and optimizing the thickness of each layer in the solar cell may play an important role in obtaining efficient photoelectric conversion properties and organic electronic materials. The fabricated C -assembly films may accelerate the development of organic photoelectric conversion devices as novel n-type fullerene-based materials and organic electronic materials. 60 60 60 60
