We have investigated the incident-photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) of thin films of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and [6,6]-phenyl- C -butyric acid methylester (PCBM) as a function of film thickness, in the presence or absence of silver nanoparticles (AgPs) between the films and the indium-tin-oxide (ITO) electrode. The thickness of the film was evaluated by atomic force microscopy. The absorption and photocurrent action spectra of the films were measured to investigate the effect of the thickness of the P3HT:PCBM film. The results show that IPCE increased steeply in thinner films and the optimal range of thicknesses of the P3HT:PCBM film was 50-120 nm. In this optimal range, the IPCEs were 1.5- 1.8 times larger in the presence of AgPs. © 2012 The Japan Society of Applied Physics. 61

Cuprous oxide (CuO) and zinc oxide (ZnO) heterojunction solar cells fabricated on indium tin oxide-coated glass were studied. CuO and ZnO films were deposited using a galvanostatic method. Structural, morphological and optoelectronic properties of the CuO/ZnO heterojunction were studied by using X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy and light current-voltage characteristics. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Poly[diphenylsilane] (PDPS)-based photovoltaic cells were fabricated by using mixture solution of PDPS, phosphorus and boron. An influence of phosphorus and boron doping into PDPS on the performance of the photovoltaic device was investigated. The solar cell using fluorine doped tin oxide glass plates provided short-circuit current density of 0.12 mA/cm and open-circuit voltage of 0.28 V under simulated sunlight. Energy levels, formation mechanism and microstructure of the solar cells were discussed. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd. 2

C -based bulk heterojunction solar cells were fabricated, and the electronic and optical properties were investigated. C were used as n-type semiconductors, and copper oxides, CuInS and diamond were used as p-type semiconductors. Electronic structures of the molecules were investigated by molecular orbital calculation, and energy levels of the solar cells were discussed. Nanostructures of the solar cells were investigated by transmission electron microscopy, electron diffraction and X-ray diffraction, which indicated formation of mixed nanocrystals. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd. 60 60 2

Microstructures of spherical silicon solar cells were investigated by transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Optical absorption and photoluminescence of the solar cells were also measured by UV-visible and fluorescence spectroscopy. F-doped SnO anti-reflection coating layers were investigated by XRD, and the nanostructures and grain sizes were determined. Polysilane/fullerene bulk heterojunction solar cells were fabricated on indium tin oxide electrode by a spin-coating method, and performance and microstructures of the solar cell were investigated. Poly-methyl-phenylsilane, poly-phenylsilane, deca-phenyl-cyclopentasilane and [6,6]-phenyl C -butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM), poly[3-hexylthiophene] (P3HT) were used for the present cells. A device based on the P3HT and PCBM provided better efficiency, fill factor, and short-circuit current compared to those of a device based on P3HT and fullerene. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd. 61
