Fabrication and characterization of C-60/tetrathiafulvalene solar cells was carried out. Photovoltaic properties of bulk-hetero and heterojunciotn solar cells were investigated by light-induced current vs. voltage curves and optical absorption. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) image, X-ray and electron diffraction showed that the bulk-heterojunction film had the microstructure of C-60 crystal structure with TTF phase. Heat treatment of the heterojunction film with tetraethylsilane improved the photovoltaic performance, yielding a slight increase of conversion efficiency. This result would be originated in improvement of microstructure around inner interface between the both crystal phases. Mechanisms of the photovoltaic properties were discussed on the basis of the experimental results. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Design of spin labels inside for possible molecular spintronics, which contains 1D spin chain filling single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) with magnetic endohedral fullerenes of N-14@C-60, has been suggested. Electronic structure and magnetic properties of N-14@C-60-SWCNT armchair for chiral index (n, n) n=9-13 in contrast with SWCNT and N-14@C-60 were characterized. Especially, influence of the SWCNT diameter on electronic structure, magnetic parameters of chemical shift of C-13, principal gtensor and hyperfine coupling constant of nitrogen atom was investigated by ab-initio density functional theory. Influence of chemical substitution in the Fe-II spin crossover complex on magnetic properties in emulsion polymerization of trifluoroethylmethacrylate using poly(vinyl alcohol) as a protective colloid was investigated near its high spin/low spin (HS/LS) phase transition. The obvious bi-stability of the HS/LS phase transition was considered by the identification of multiple spin states between the quintet (S=2) states to single state (S=0) across the excited triplet state (S=1). Magnetic parameters of gradual shifts of anisotropy g-tensor supported by the molecular distortion of the spin crossover complex would arise from a Jahn-Teller effect regarding ligand field theory on the basis of a B3LYP density functional theory using electron spin resonance (ESR) spectrum and X-ray powder diffraction. Fullerene-based bulk heterojunction solar cells were fabricated, and the electronic and optical properties were investigated. C-60 were used as n-type semiconductors, and porphyrin, CuInS2 and diamond were used as p-type semiconductors. An effect of exciton-diffusion blocking layer of perylene derivative on the solar cells between active layer and metal layer was also investigated. Optimized structures with the exciton-diffusion blocking layer improved conversion efficiencies. Electronic structures of the molecules were investigated by molecular orbital calculation, and energy levels of the solar cells were discussed. Nanostructures of the solar cells were investigated by transmission electron microscopy, electron diffraction and X-ray diffraction, which indicated formation of mixed nanocrystals.
