    Abstract

    There is currently considerable interest in high-density polyethylene (HDPE)/ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) blends as recyclable all-polyolefin materials with favorable mechanical properties that can be processed by continuous melt-mixing. Optimal mixing is required to improve the mechanical properties of polymer blends by ensuring their dispersibility and low degradation. In the present study, we investigated the effects of mixing temperature on the dispersion and degradation behaviors of HDPE/UHMWPE blends. Neat HDPE and a HDPE blend comprising 5 % UHMWPE were obtained by melt-mixing while changing the input energy in an internal batch mixer under a nitrogen atmosphere. The temperature of the mixer was set at 200 °C for neat HDPE, and at 180, 200, and 220 °C for the HDPE/UHMWPE blends. Optical microscopy and thermal analysis revealed that the dispersion of UHMWPE in HDPE was accelerated at higher mixing temperatures. However, in the high input energy range, mixing at 200 °C resulted in the most favorable dispersion. Gel permeation chromatography and rheological measurements suggested that chain scission and branching/crosslinking due to degradation were accelerated at higher mixing temperatures, even when mixing in a nitrogen atmosphere. Chemiluminescence measurements suggested that chain scission and branching/crosslinking were caused by an initial oxidation reaction. Furthermore, for the same input energy, the maximum shear stress increased as the mixing temperature decreased, but the mixing time and thermal history increased as the mixing temperature increased. The results suggest that in a blend comprising HDPE and UHMWPE, mixing at the molecular level due to high temperature and fine dispersion of UHMWPE due to shear stress proceed simultaneously. On the other hand, the results also confirmed that degradation was more influenced by the promotion of oxidation due to high temperatures and prolonged mixing than by shear stress.

    In this study, we investigated the relationship between the amorphous structural changes associated with enthalpy relaxation and the Heat distortion temperature (HDT) in polystyrene injection moldings. It was clarified that the longer heat treatment time, the more enthalpy relaxation progressed. Also, an extrapolation glass transition temperature (Tig) increased by heat treatment. In addition, long-time heat treatment caused the high-temperature shift of the storage modulus (E') decrease temperature near glass transition temperature (Tg). Since the increase in Tig and the high-temperature shift of E' decrease temperature correlated with the enthalpy relaxation, they can be closely related to the enthalpy relaxation. Thus, we considered that the segment motion of polymer chain was suppressed as the enthalpy relaxation progressed. At long-term heat treatment, the enthalpy relaxation and the HDT were correlated. Furthermore, density increased by the heat treatment, and the increase in density also correlated with the progress of the enthalpy relaxation. Therefore, we considered that the polymer chains densely packed along with the enthalpy relaxation. As the result of polymer chains being densely packed, the segment motion of polymer chains near Tg can be suppressed and the HDT increased.

    Liquid crystalline (LC) phase behavior, higer-order structure, and mobility of mesogenic groups were investigated by using DSC, polarizing optical microscopy, small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) and dielectric relaxation spectroscopy (DRS) for random copolymers composed of cyanobiphenyl-based side-chain LC and the amorphous components with various compositions. LC phase behavior of the copolymers was systematically changed depending on the mole fraction of the LC component, fLC11. When fLC11 > 0.75, incorporation of small fraction of the amorphous component resulted in slightly highered LC order and almost unchanged LC-isotropic transition temperature, Tiso. This may be because the copolymerization of the amorphous component canceled the inherent frustration in the LC homopolymer, which comes from the dissidence between lateral distance of adjacent nearest mesogenic groups in the smectic LC phase and that of the side-chains on mainchain. According to the DRS measurements, incorporation of the amorphous component also accelerated the molecular mobility of the mesogenic groups, which may be also related to the relaxation of the internal conformational frustration because of the dissidence.

    The mechanism of heat resistance improvement of polystyrene injection moldings by heat treatment was studied. The increase in the Heat Distortion Temperature (HDT) by heat treatment was confirmed. Meanwhile, in dynamic viscoelasticity measurement, the shoulder of the loss tangent (tanδ) appeared at 60 to 90°C in untreated specimen. In the heat-treated specimen, the shoulder at that temperature range disappeared. Further, when the frequency dependence of tanδ was evaluated, it was found that the mobility of molecular chain in the main dispersion did not change by the heat treatment, and the mobility in the temperature range where the tanδ shoulder appeared was reduced by the heat treatment. By differential scanning calorimetry, the progress of enthalpy relaxation by heat treatment was confirmed. Also, excellent correlation existed between the progress of enthalpy relaxation and the disappearance of the tanδ shoulder by heat treatment. Since the tanδ shoulder disappeared in the heat-treated specimen in which relaxation has progressed yet, it was considered that the tanδ shoulder was caused by molecular motion accompanying the relaxation phenomenon. Addisionally, as well as the disappearance of the tanδ shoulder, the increase in HDT correlated with the progress of enthalpy relaxation by heat treatment. In conclusion, with the progress of the relaxation by the heat treatment, the tanδ shoulder disappeared, and thereby the molecular mobility at 60 to 90°C decreasesed. Since the HDT of the untreated specimen was 78°C, the HDT increased due to the decrease in the molecular mobility below 78°C by heat treatment. Thus, it is considered that the increase in HDT correlated with the progress of enthalpy relaxation by heat treatement.

    In this study, photo-and thermal-degradation behaviors of high density polyethylene (HDPE) with/without polymethylphenylsilane (PMPS) were investigated. There is a tendency that the modulus of HDPE with/without PMPS exposed to UV irradiation increased with exposure time, although the elongation at break decreased with exposure time. In particular, the ductile-brittle transition occurs earlier by the addition of PMPS. This result suggests that PMPS can accelerate photo-degradation of HDPE. As for the thermal-degradation, the oxidation induction time (OIT) of HDPE with PMPS is also shorter than that of neat one. Moreover, the activation energy of the oxidation of HDPE decreased with the PMPS content, indicating that PMPS also accelerates the thermal-degradation. Although the mechanism to accelerate the photo-and thermal-degradation of HDPE has not been cleared yet, it can be deduced that the pro-oxidant process caused by accelerating autoxidation with silyl radical generated by PMPS during UV irradiation and/or heattreatment occurred in HDPE.

    Low density poly(ethylene) (LDPE) samples were reprocessed in multiple cycles by a single-screw extruder. The reprocessed heat degraded samples were characterized by gel permeation chromatogram (GPC), dynamic viscoelasticity and stress-strain measurement.<br> The decrease in molecular weight (M<sub>w</sub>) obtained from GPC measurement for LDPE with reprocessing was small than that for poly(propylene) (PP) and poly(styrene) (PS) in the region of low degradation time (t<30 min). Degradation time dependence of the molecular weight (M<sub>η</sub>) obtained from measurements of viscoelasticity for LDPE was very different from that for PP and PS. In LDPE, not only the scission of polymer chain but the formation of branched and crosslinked chain are caused by heat degradation mainly at the week point on polymer chain, so that M<sub>η</sub> was constant regardless of t. Young's modulus (E) obtained from stress-strain curves did not change for both the virgin and heat degraded samples.<br>

    In this study, effect of adding EEBE (ethylene-b-ethylene•buthylene-b-ethylene triblock copolymer) compatibilizer into a series of polyethylene (PE)/polypropylene (PP) blends was investigated in terms of their morphological, mechanical, and viscoelastic properties. Although the neat PE/PP blends showed brittle property, when adding EEBE as a compatibilizer into them, their tensile properties became ductile and, as a result, the elongation at break was over 1000%. From the results of the Charpy impact test, the strength of the PE/PP blends, particularly, in which PE content was more than 30wt%, increased with increasing the amount of the EEBE compatibilizer. The impact strength drastically increased around at −40°C, and the temperature corresponds to the glass-transition temperature (Tg) of EEBE, which is referred to the α dispersion on viscoelestic measurement. The morphology of PE/PP blends stained by ruthenium oxide was observed using scanning electron microscope (SEM). It shows that the size of PP domain, 4.24 μm, decreased to 1.62 μm by adding EEBE. Furthermore, the activation energies of the γ dispersion of PE, the β dispersion of PP, and the α dispersion of EEBE were not changed with PP contents and with/without EEBE, indicating that EEBE mainly influenced the free energy of the surface of PE/PP phase, not the molecular motions of PE and PP phases.<br>

    In this study, the mechanical properties and morphological change of polyethylene terephthalate (PET)/medium density polyethylene (MDPE) blends with/without compatibilizers were investigated upon heat-treatment cycling. The compatibilizer, which consists of ethylene-glycidyl methacrylate (EGMA) as a main chain, showed the good mechanical properties. For example, PET/MDPE with EGMA compatibilizer blend had the higher elongation at breaking (~800%) in comparison with the PET/MDPE without compatibilizer (neat PET/MDPE). Although the value of the elongation at break of PET/MDPE with/without EGMA compatibilizer decreased upon heat-treatment cycling, the PET/MDPE with 3wt%~5wt% EGMA compatibilizer still showed the high elongation at break at the second heat-treatment cycle and after the third cycle. This result shows the possibility that the material recycling concerning PET, which is recycled mainly one time, can be substantially done two times or more, and an increase of the heat-treatment cycling number means that the gross weight of present PET waste and PE waste can be greatly decreased. In order to compare the morphological change of the PET/MDPE with/without compatibilizer, scanning electron microscope observation was carried out. As a result, when adding the EGMA compatibilizer into the PET/MDPE, the size of the PE phase was smaller than that of neat PET/MDPE. Moreover, after several heat-treatment cycles, the morphological change was not be observed for the PET/MDPE with EGMA compatibilizer. From these results, it would be deduced that EGMA can react with the end-groups of PET during heat-treatment, so that the mechanical properties and morphological change of PET/PE composites can not be observed.<br>

    In our previous research, the effect of "significantly lowering melt viscosity" and "improving heat-sealing properties" by adding polysilane (polymethylphenylsilane: hereinafter PMPS) to polypropylene (hereinafter PP) Is reported. As one of the factors, it is suggested that PMPS addition may be due to the effect of retarding the crystallization rate in PP, but the present situation is that the crystallization process in this system has not been sufficiently investigated. . Therefore, in this study, we examined the effect of crystallization process by adding PMPS to PP. We investigated the effect of adding PMPS to silicone rubber (Q) as a rubber material.

    Recently, as for the thermoplastic materials in Japan, polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) occupy more than half of the annual production. Particularly, PP is widely used for many application, such as automobile so on, because PP is superior in thermal properties as well as mechanical properties. When PP is jointed with each other, heat-fusion process has usually been employed and its efficiency has been tried to be improved still now. In this study, we investigated that heat-fusion properties of PP with/without polysilane (PSi) and made clear the effect on molecular motions of PP by means of rheological measurement. As a result, it was found that, as for the heat-fusion process of PP, PSi made it shorter the process time or lower the temperature, and higher the peeling energy on the same condition. Moreover, it was found that PE had strong interaction energy with PSi on the basis of MD calculation.
