    The shortage of labor is one of the major challenges facing agriculture in Japan. Technological innovations are required to overcome the limitations of the workload per worker. One such innovation is smart agriculture, which utilizes advanced technologies such as robots, AI, and IoT. This study aimed to provide data on the workload and pest control costs for the development of sustainable agriculture. The cost of pest control was compared between a boom sprayer, power sprayer, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for two model rice farmers. The Ovako Working Posture Analysis System (OWAS) and metabolic equivalent (METs) were used to measure workloads while using UAVs. The labor cost was reduced to half with the usage of UAVs compared with conventional machines. The resulting METs, or physical activity during pest-control work using UAVs, could be lower than those when using pest control machines. Through OWAS, 63.86% of the total jobs using UAVs were identified as having a low risk of musculoskeletal injury. The results suggest that UAVs could compensate for the shortage of workers, and these are effective tools to support the expansion of the agricultural area.

    To contribute to implementation of autonomous water reclamation-circulation and energy management suitable for the regions of developing countries such as Southeast Asia, development of the technologies related to water reclamation-circulation focusing on membrane separation and ultraviolet irradiation and the technologies for optimization of saving / creation / storage of energy in off-grid system focusing on application of electric vehicles as well as the construction of virtual power plants were studied. Feasibility of introducing this system and its evaluation method by life cycle assessment were also examined. A large progress in developing various technologies applicable to water reclamation-circulation and development of simulation-tools based on full-scale verification test of power supply stabilization of houses was acquired. The possibility of introducing autonomous water reclamation-circulation and energy management system with its evaluation method was also exhibited.

    This study investigated behavior of renewable electricity market participated by small scale electricity producer such as households. Its effect to economy and environment is evaluated mainly by economic experiment method. Results showed that a level of electricity price fluctuated by each run of the experiments of small scale (a few households) market, however, the market was capable to adjust a supply-demand balance against a certain variation of weather and electricity demand. A combination of a renewable electricity market and a cap-and-trade emissions trading of carbon dioxide was effective to promote renewable electricity trading.

    This study developed methodology of life cycle assessment (LCA) considering environmental, social, economic impact in agri-food sector. As product level assessment, we implemented LCA of rice production in Japan and Thailand taking into account GHG emission estimation model in paddy field and social and economic impact such as labor input, production cost, and regional economy. Result revealed the assessment we proposed is widely applicable if assessment tools are developed. We also proposed forecasting methodology of life cycle environmental impact related to food consumption considering household characteristics change for country and regional level assessment.
