We demonstrate that the modified Kempers model, a recently developed theoretical model for the Soret effect in oxide melts, is applicable for predicting the composition dependence of the Soret coefficient in three binary molecular liquids with negative enthalpies of mixing. We compared the theoretical and experimental values for water/ethanol, water/methanol, water/ethylene glycol, water/acetone, and benzene/n-heptane mixtures. In water/ethanol, water/methanol, and water/ethylene glycol, which have negative enthalpies of mixing across the entire mole fraction range, the modified Kempers model successfully predicts the sign change of the Soret coefficient with high accuracy, whereas, in water/acetone and benzene/n-heptane, which have composition ranges with positive enthalpies of mixing, it cannot predict the sign change of the Soret coefficient. These results suggest that the model is applicable in composition ranges with negative enthalpies of mixing and provides a framework for predicting and understanding the Soret effect from the equilibrium thermodynamic properties of mixing, such as the partial molar volume, partial molar enthalpy of mixing, and chemical potential.

Using a laser-induced local-heating experiment combined with temperature analysis, we observed the composition-dependent sign inversion of the Soret coefficient of SiO2 in binary silicate melts, which was successfully explained by a modified Kempers model used for describing the Soret effect in oxide melts. In particular, the diffusion of SiO2 to the cold side under a temperature gradient, which is an anomaly in silicate melts, was observed in the SiO2-poor compositions. The theoretical model indicates that the thermodynamic mixing properties of oxides, partial molar enthalpy of mixing, and partial molar volume are the dominant factors for determining the migration direction of the SiO2 component under a temperature gradient.

The Soret effect in silicate melts has attracted attention in earth and material sciences, particularly in glass science and engineering, because a compositional change caused by the Soret effect modifies the material properties of silicate melts. We investigated the Soret effect in an Na2O–SiO2 system, which is the most common representative of silicate melts. Our theoretical approach based on the modified Kempers model and non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulation was validated for 30Na2O–70SiO2(mol. %). The sign and order of the absolute values of the calculated Soret coefficients were consistent with the experimental values. The positive Soret coefficient of SiO2 in the SiO2-poor composition range was accurately predicted. Previous experimental studies have focused on SiO2-rich compositions, and only the negative sign, indicating SiO2 migration to the hot side, has been observed. In the SiO2-poor composition range, the Q0 structure was dominant and had four Si–O–Na bonds around an SiO4 unit. The Si–O–Na bond had high enthalpic stability and contributed to the large negative enthalpy of SiO2 mixing. According to our model, components with a large negative partial molar enthalpy of mixing will concentrate in the cold region. The microscopic and thermodynamic origins of the sign change in the Soret effect were determined.

Deformation experiments for 20(MgO or Na O)-20Al O -60SiO glasses were performed in simple shear geometry at 1.5-5 GPa and room temperature. An abrupt change in the thinning rate and the turning of the birefringence azimuth at a shear strain of γ = 1-2 indicate a transition of deformation mechanism from uniaxial compression aided by densification to shear flow in the glasses. The high-dense magnesium aluminosilicate glass showed strain softening controlled by the rearrangement of the tetrahedral network. On the other hand, low-dense sodium aluminosilicate glass deformed by packing-induced flow associated with densification and via the rearrangement of the tetrahedral network at lower and higher strains, respectively. The transition of the deformation mechanism was triggered by the limitations of the densification of the tetrahedral network. The difference of deformation mechanism brought about higher strain in magnesium aluminosilicate glass than sodium aluminosilicate glass at the same stress condition. Easiness of remarkable deformation, which relaxed residual stress, and high deformability contributed to the high ductility of the MgO-aluminosilicate glass. 2 2 3 2

The Soret effect is a diffusion phenomenon driven by a temperature gradient in a multicomponent system. This effect in condensed systems is not fully understood. Previously, we reported a theoretical model called “adjusted Kempers model” to predict the Soret coefficient in glass melts, and compared the experimental value to the theoretical value for 11Na O-89B O (mol%) melts. Here, molecular dynamics calculations, as well as theoretical and experimental values, are quantitatively compared in 10Na O-90GeO melts. We used a vertical tubular furnace to cause a temperature gradient and heated the sample from top side to reduce the natural convection. We measured the composition of 10Na O-90GeO glass samples after 45, 90, and 180 hours of heat treatment under a temperature gradient, and estimated the steady-state Soret coefficient near 1373 K to be 1.09 × 10  K . In addition, we calculated Soret coefficients to be 3.65 × 10  K and 1.85 × 10  K in theory and molecular dynamics calculation, respectively. The ratios between the experimental and theoretical Soret coefficients were 1.2 and 3.3 for 11Na O-89B O melts and 10Na O-90GeO melts, respectively. The difference in ratios may be attributed to the mass and size of diffusion species in the glass melts. 2 2 3 2 2 2 2 2 2 3 2 2 −3 −1 −3 −1 −3 −1

© 2018, The Author(s). The Soret effect or thermodiffusion is the temperature-gradient driven diffusion in a multicomponent system. Two important conclusions have been obtained for the Soret effect in multicomponent silicate melts: first, the SiO 2 component concentrates in the hot region; and second, heavier isotopes concentrate in the cold region more than lighter isotopes. For the second point, the isotope fractionation can be explained by the classical mechanical collisions between pairs of particles. However, as for the first point, no physical model has been reported to answer why the SiO 2 component concentrates in the hot region. We try to address this issue by simulating the composition dependence of the Soret effect in CaO–SiO 2 melts with nonequilibrium molecular dynamics and determining through a comparison of the results with those calculated from the Kempers model that partial molar enthalpy is one of the dominant factors in this phenomenon.

©2018 The Ceramic Society of Japan The Soret effect or thermodiffusion is temperature-gradient-driven diffusion in a multicomponent system. A physical model to accurately predict the Soret coefficient of oxide melts has not yet been proposed. Here, for the first time, we report a quantitative comparison between experiment and theory concerning the Soret coefficient in binary glass-forming oxide melts. We measured the Soret coefficient of 11Na 2 O89B 2 O 3 (mol %) after 90- and 180-h heat treatment under a temperature gradient near 1200 K and estimated the Soret coefficient for the steady state. We used a vertical furnace to reduce the effect of natural convection on the Soret effect by heating the sample from the top side. The Soret coefficient estimated for the steady state near 1200 K was 5.12 © 10 13 K 11 , whereas that obtained by the adjusted Kempers model, in which we adjusted the original Kempers thermodynamic model for binary oxide melts, was 6.09 © 10 13 K 11 . The sign and order of magnitude were consistent, which suggests that the adjusted Kempers model is a promising model to explain the Soret effect and that the equilibrium thermodynamic parameters of partial molar volume, partial molar enthalpy, and chemical potential are important factors in the phenomenon.

© 2018 Elsevier B.V. A 41.6MgO-27.1B 2 O 3 -31.2SiO 2 glass was synthesized by container-less levitation method. B K-edge X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy was used to quantify the coordination of boron in the as-made glass, resulting in ~72% of boron in 3-fold coordination. Raman spectroscopy indicated that the glass structure includes depolymerized borate units, which are pyroborate (B 2 O 54− ) and ring and/or chain-type metaborate (B 3 O 63− , (BO 2 O − ) ∞ ) groups. The structural changes in the glass under hydrostatic condition were investigated by high-pressure Raman spectroscopy within a diamond anvil cell at pressures up to 8.5 GPa. On the borate structure, metaborate groups decreased with pressure. In contrast, triborate groups, which include tetrahedrally coordinated boron and have a fully polymerized borate network, increased; suggesting that the coordination transformation of B and polymerization were induced via compression. However, the modification of the borate structure units seems to be reversible at least up to 8.5 GPa. As for the silicate network, Q 0 and Q 1 structures were responsible to compression. Specifically, Q 0 could be replaced by Q 1 with elevating pressure, which means that the silicate network becomes polymerized with pressure. Whereas, structure of glass samples recovered from the pressure higher than 5 GPa displayed depolymerized silicate network, as dissociation of Q 2 to Q 1 . The observed structural changes in the silicate network implied a partial change of the coordination number of Si 4+ ions, which can be enhanced by the presence of a modifier cation with high field strength such as Mg 2+ .

At the scratch process of glass, both median (vertical to the glass surface) and lateral (horizontal to the glass surface) cracks are formed. In this study, morphology of the scratch-induced cracks in a commercial soda-lime-silica glass was investigated by the scanning electron microscopy for the specimen broken across the scratch groove. Scratch test was carried out using a Knoop indenter in water and in dehydrated heptane. When scratch speed was 70 × 10^−6 m s−1, length of both vertical and horizontal cracks was proportional to the normal load at scratching, and environmental dependence was not observed. When scratch speed was increased with the constant normal load of 200 g, length of both cracks was decreased. In the case of horizontal crack, no environmental effect was observed. On the other hand, length of the vertical crack scratched in water was much longer than that in heptane. At very high scratch speed as high as 1,000 × 10^−6 m s−1, no vertical crack was formed in the heptane. These differences between horizontal and vertical cracks should be due to the differences of crack initiation position and the influence of subcritical crack growth to these cracks.

It is well known that glass undergoes elastic and inelastic deformation under a sharp diamond indenter. Although brittle or less brittle behavior of glass must be connected with such mechanical responses of glass under the indenter, there has been limited research on in situ deformation behavior of glass during the loading and unloading indentation cycle. This is because most indentation tests were conducted using a commercial hardness tester for which this information is not available. In this study, the in situ sinking-in region of glass during indentation test is determined using a custom-designed indentation microscope with trigonal pyramid indenters having different tip angles. It is found that both the shape of contact region and the amount of sinking-in are affected by indenter geometries and that the projected contact region of the glass sample under Berkovich indenter is not a regular triangle but a concave triangle with bowed-in edges. This is due to the larger amount of sinking-in under the face than under the ridge of indenter. It is also found that these deformation behaviors of glass are inseparably linked with contact damage or cracking in glass.

We investigate the effect of glass composition on crack formation probability in aluminoborosilicate(ALBS) glass. The ALBS glass base composition is 13Na2O4K2O6MgO16Al2O312B2O349SiO2(mol%). Various glass compositions are prepared by replacing SiO2 in the base composition with other oxides. Mechanical properties, including crack formation probability, are evaluated and their compositional variation is discussed in terms of glass structure. Lower crack formation probability results from larger concentrations of bridging oxygen atoms around Si in glass.

Indentation deformation of glass under a sharp diamond indenter causes cracking during and after a loading–unloading cycle. To get a deeper insight into the indentation cracking in glass, it is critical to understand the elastic and inelastic deformation behavior of glass under the indenter. In this study, in situ observations during Vickers indentations are carried out for silica, soda-lime, and lead–silicate glasses. It is found that the true contact area during indentation is different from the area estimated from the contact depth and the indenter geometry, and that the ridges of a Vickers indenter affect the contact shape during indentation. The contact region of silicate glasses under a Vickers indenter is not a regular square but a concave square. This results in edge cracking during indentation. It is concluded that the contact shape and the deformation mechanism of glass under the indenter are closely related to its cracking behaviors.

Heat capacities of 75SiO2-6B2O3-10Al2O3-9MO(M=Mg,Ca, Sr and Ba) glasses and melts were determined between 345 and 1877 K by differential scanning calorimetry and drop calorimetry. The heat capacities of glasses and melts increase with increasing field strength of alkaline-earth metals. The glass transition takes place when the heat capacity of glass reaches 95-97%
of Dulong-Petit harmonic limit. The configurational contribution to the melt heat capacity is about 20% and is independent of temperature. The partial molar heat capacity of B2O3 (CpB2O3 ) in borosilicate melts containing alkaline-earth metals approaches to constant value (110-120 J·K¹1·mol¹1) above 1600 K and is consistent with heat capacity of pure B2O3 liquid. This suggests that there are no significant differences in coordination state of boron and in B-Si
ordering among Mg, Ca, Sr and Ba-bearing alumino-borosilicate melts.

The densities of two simulated radioactive waste glasses and melts were determined between 298 and 1278 K by the Archimedean immersion method for annealed glasses at room temperature, dilatometric measurements for glasses in the temperature range from 373 K to the glass transition region and Archimedean densitometry using a molten chloride salt for liquids above 825 K. At temperatures above 1079 K the density of a stable liquid can be measured with a precision of 0·3%. The molar volume of waste glass melt between 1079 and 1278 K is consistent with both the high temperature extrapolation of the molar volume at the glass transition temperature and the value estimated using partial molar volumes reported previously, which has been obtained using double-bob Archimedean densitometry. The temperature dependence of the molar volume (dV/dT) between the glass transition temperature and 1278 K is significantly larger than that calculated using partial molar thermal expansivities in the previous model. This suggests that the thermal expansivity of borosilicate melts is temperature dependent.

The Na2O activities for (100-x-y)SiO2-xNa2O-yCaO (x = 12-30; y = 5-22, mol%) melts have been measured between 1273 K and 1573 K. The Na2O activity increases with increasing Na2O and CaO content when the melt is a depolymerized composition. The effect of Na2O and CaO contents on the Na2O activity decreases with increasing SiO2 content. They can be interpreted in terms of Gibbs energy of mixing as a concave function of composition. The comparison of partial molar entropy of mixing for soda-lime silicate and sodium silicate melts suggests the existence of local maximum of the entropy of mixing in depolymerized composition of SiO2-Na2O-CaO system. The effect of CaO on redox reaction of iron in silicate melt calculated from the Na2O activity is quantitatively consistent with that measured by voltammetry and wet-chemical analysis.

Fictive temperature dependence of the refractive index, density, and Raman spectra of commercial dense crown optical glass widely used for lens production is investigated. It is found that the main peak in Raman spectra shifts higher with increasing the fictive temperature. As well as density and refractive index, this peak position around 1100cm-1 has linear relation with the fictive temperature. Relaxation of Raman spectra is similar with that of refractive index, and they are different from that of density.
For the comparison, one commercial soda-lime-silicate glass is investigated as well as dense crown optical glass. Raman spectrum of this glass shifts lower as the fictive temperature. The difference between each relaxation time is less than that of dense crown optical glass.

Absorption at 2700 cm-1 which originates from BO stretching vibration of three-fold coordinated boron increased with increasing the temperature above Tg. This should be due the formation of BØ3 unit by decomposition of BØ4 to BØ3 + NBO and of boroxol ring to loose BØ3.

The structure on MgO-B2O3-SiO2 (4:2:4 and 6:2:2 in molar ratio) glasses has been investigated by means of Mg, B K-edge XANES and Raman spectroscopy. Highly de-polymerized borate groups, which almost consist of B[3], was observed in the glass with the higher MgO content, suggesting that the glass has more closed structure. As the evidence, the glass exhibits fairly high Young's modulus, 138 GPa. However, the glass with lower MgO content was more tougher (high crack resistance) because of the enhancement of the network structures, which consist of B[4].

In the glass manufacturing process, bubbles should be removed from glass melt. Many efforts have been made to produce glass products without any bubbles. It is considered that electrolytic decomposition of glass melt should be one origin of bubble generation. However, the mechanism is still unclear. In order to develop manufacturing process with high efficiency, it is of primary importance to evaluate the electrolytic decomposition of glass melt. In this study, electrochemical reactions of silicate glass melt under alternating voltage application are investigated, and a mechanism of bubble generation is discussed using the Nernst equation for oxygen evolution.

Thermal diffusivity(D) was measured for vitreous SiO2, soda lime silicate(SLS) glass and E glass from room temperature to 1073 K. Temperature response curves were obtained by Step heating method. Values of D were estimated by using an analysis method which removes radiative heat transfer effect from irradiated to back faces of the transparent sample. Reliable values of D were obtained for vitreous SiO2. D of SLS glass and E glass decreased more than 10% around the glass transition temperature.

Mixing of 11B and 10B in borate glass increases the low temperature heat capacity and decreases the thermal diffusivity. These can be explained by the localization of atomic vibration. Mixing of them also causes the decrease of viscosity which will be due to the inhibition of cooperative motion. Borosilicate glasses can be separated to two groups; one shows the mixed isotope effect in viscosity and the other doesn’t. This difference should be due to the difference of dominant atomic process in viscose flow.

Relationship between composition, crack resistance and structure was investigated for aluminoborosilicate glasses. The crack resistance suddenly decreases when the ratio of (Q3+Q4)/(Q2+Q3+Q4) is less than ca. 0.7. In series B, crack resistance increases with increasing four-coordinated boron units. By the addition of a small amount of B2O3, the glass can be produced with improved productivity, effective ion-exchange rate, and higher crack resistance.

Two-point bending(2PB) tests were performed for Na2O-SiO2-GeO2 and Na2O-B2O3-GeO2 glass fibers. 2PB failure strain (or strength) increases with increasing 6-coordinated Ge in glass. Some inelastic dissipation energy at failure may result in high-strength germanate glasses. We should look at such permanent structural change in glass under high stress to design ‘High-strength’ glass.

The structural change in magnesium borosilicate glass under hydrostatic pressure was investigated by high-pressure Raman spectroscopy. The elastic moduli of the glass showed relatively higher value compared with Na2O-B2O3-SiO2 glass. The structure of as-made glass was investigated by B and Mg k-edge x-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES), which indicate that the coordination number of B could be almost 3 and that Mg may have higher coordination number. The structural response in compression was examined within diamond anvil cell, up to 8 GPa. As for silicate group, Q2 and Q3 structure were responsible to compression. The silicate network becomes polymerized with pressure. However, the structural change was almost reversible. On the borate group, metaborate group, which consists of three triangular boron with one non-bridging oxygen, decreased with pressure. In contrast, triborate group, which includes four-fold coordinated boron and has fully polymerized borate network, increased.
