Reuse-efficiency model for evaluating circularity of end-of-life products 査読国際誌

Reusing end-of-life products is an effective approach to reduce environmental waste. It is crucial to evaluate the number of products that will be reused quantitatively when the durability of circular products and the collection rate of end-of-life products are improved to enhance the circulation of reusable products. Likewise, it is necessary to evaluate how multiple reuse cycles affect the circularity of reusable products in the product design stage. This study develops a reuse-efficiency model to evaluate the extent of reuse of end-of-life products quantitatively. Circular products are characterized by `relative deterioration' and `absolute deterioration', and the time to each type of deterioration follows an independent probability distribution. The reuse-efficiency model is developed based on the harmonic mean of three reuse-efficiency factors generated by the relative and absolute deteriorations. The effects of the product’s durability, collection rate and recycling rate of end-of-life products, and maximum number of reuse cycles on the reuse efficiency are investigated. Furthermore, the optimal durability of a product, optimal collection rate of endof- life products, and maximum number of reuse cycles are obtained by maximising the reuse efficiency per unit cost, which considers the costs of durability extension and collection of end-of-life products. The insights obtained from this study encourage the redistribution and reuse of products and are expected to establish an improved circular economy.

A mathematical model for reuse efficiency is developed to quantitatively evaluate how many end-of-life products with repairs are circulated as reused products. Circular products have relative deterioration and absolute deterioration, in which the time to each deterioration follows an independent probability distribution. The reuse-efficiency model is generated by the harmonic mean of three reuse-efficiency factors generated by the relative and absolute deteriorations and repairs. Contour plots of the reuse efficiency, collection rate, durability, and repairing rate are shown when relative and absolute deteriorations follow independent Weibull distributions. Optimal solutions for product durability, the collection rate of end-of-life products, the repairing rate of the collected products, and the number of reuse cycles are obtained.

Manufacturers can reduce environmental impact and costs by introducing remanufacturing. In remanufacturing, inventory control of remanufactured and newly manufactured products should be considered for production planning. It is indispensable for predicting the demand quantity of products and the collecting quantity of used products to minimize the total cost incurred by remanufacturing and newly manufacturing. The prediction varies depending on the product characteristics and the time elapsed since shipment. In this paper, we study a remanufacturing system minimizing the total cost by a life-cycle simulation method. In the flow of products, there are two types of inventory: one is a remanufactured and newly manufactured product inventory before shipment to the market, and the other is a collected product inventory for used products. Depending on the time elapsed since launch, products pass through an introductory stage, a growth stage, a maturity stage, and a decline stage in a usual manner. We analyze the impact on the total cost of the prediction accuracy of the product demand and the collected used products to each stage. When the ratio of an ordering cost for newly manufactured products to an inventory holding cost for the finished products has a significant value, or as the life-cycle stage is approaching the decline stage, the predicting accuracy of collection of the used products and the product demand has a high impact on the total cost.

© 2018, Springer International Publishing AG. Automated blood vessels detection on retinal images is an important process in the development of pathologies analysis systems. This paper describes about an automated blood vessel extraction using high-order local autocorrelation (HLAC) on retinal images. Although HLAC features are shift-invariant, HLAC features are weak to turned image. Therefore, a method was improved by the addition of HLAC features to a polar transformed image. We have proposed a method using HLAC, pixel-based-features and three filters. However, we have not investigated about feature selection and machine learning method. Therefore, this paper discusses about effective features and machine learning method. We tested eight methods by extension of HLAC features, addition of 4 kinds of pixel-based features, difference of preprocessing techniques, and 3 kinds of machine learning methods. Machine learning methods are general artificial neural network (ANN), a network using two ANNs, and Boosting algorithm. As a result, our already proposed method was the best. When the method was tested by using “Digital Retinal Images for Vessel Extraction” (DRIVE) database, the area under the curve (AUC) based on receiver operating characteristics (ROC) analysis was reached to 0.960.

Remanufacturing is one of the methods which reduce environmental impact generated in production processes of industrial products. It is anticipated that the more reusable units are reused, the greater is the reduction in environmental impact. It is necessary to set a physical lifespan to a reusable unit appropriately in order to decrease environmental impact for remanufacturing in the design phase. Moreover, it should be remembered that obsolescence of reusable units may occur as time goes by, which spoils reuse of reusable units. Therefore, it is essential to consider failure, obsolescence and environmental impact simultaneously when designing industrial products with reusable units that have minimum impact on the environment. In this study, reuse efficiency is considered as an evaluation function, whose element is the number of reuse of reusable units, the number of newly manufactured reusable units and the number of disposal of reusable units in a finite time horizon. Numerical examples based on life-cycle simulation are provided along with sensitivity analysis giving key principles to improve reuse efficiency so as to derive an optimum physical life distribution.

Conventional production and consumption systems in which industrial products are manufactured and consumed and then finally disposed leads to a significant increase of environmental impact. Gaining environmental preservation in recent years, reuse and recycling of product components are an effective way to conserve natural resources when industrial products are manufactured. In this study, we propose a method to assign each product component to a reasonable end-of-life (EOL) option in the product design phase. We develop a method to determine EOL options considering component combination based on environmental impact and incurred cost, in which circulation of products is modeled by a multi-agent system. Also, we optimize disassembly level for better reuse and recycling. The proposed determination method of EOL options of components in a product is justified by numerical examples.

中古部品を利用した環境配慮型製品の製造は，新品部品を利用した製造と比べて原材料やエネルギーが少なくてもよいため，環境インパクト（影響）の低減に効果がある．しかし中古部品は新品部品よりもリユースされる分だけ長時間使用されるため，物理的な故障が発生しにくくしておく必要がある．本研究では，抽象的な製品を対象にし，製品およびリユースユニットの物理寿命分布が環境インパクトに及ぼす影響を，製品の製造から使用，廃棄，リユースに至るまでのフローを扱ったライフサイクルシミュレーションによって考察する．また，環境インパクトが最小になる，リユースユニットの物理故障分布について考察する．
