    The morphology of a melt-quenched crystalline-crystalline diblock copolymer, poly(epsilon-caprolactone)-block-polyethylene (PCL-b-PE), was studied by small-angle X-ray scattering and transmission electron microscopy. The melting behavior of PCL-b-PE was also investigated by differential scanning calorimetry. The melting temperature of PCL blocks, T-m,T-PCL, was ca. 55 degreesC and that of PE blocks was ca. 96 degreesC. Therefore, the PE block always crystallized first during quenching from the microphase-separated melt into various temperatures T-c below T-m,T-PCL to yield an alternating structure composed of PE lamellae and amorphous layers (PE lamellar morphology), and subsequently the crystallization of PCL blocks started at T-c after some induction period. The PE lamellar morphology was preserved after the crystallization of PCL blocks at low crystallization temperatures (T-c < 30 degreesC), that is, the PCL block crystallized within the PE larnellar morphology. At high crystallization temperatures (45 degreesC > T-c > 30 degreesC), on the other hand, the crystallization of PCL blocks destroyed the PE lamellar morphology to result in a new lamellar morphology mainly consisting of PCL lamellae and amorphous layers (PCL lamellar morphology). The PE crystals were fragmentarily dispersed in the PCL lamellar morphology. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

    Binding processes of an antibody (anti-dinitrophenyl(DNP)-immunoglobulin E) labeled with fluorescein groups (FITC-anti-DNP-IgE) to a hapten-doped lipid monolayer were followed by the multiple internal reflection fluorescence method, because of its usefulness in detecting the adsorption or binding of target molecules at the interface. The hapten-doped lipids used in this work were dinitrophenyl-phosphatidylethanolamine (DNP-DPPE) and dinitrophenyl-aminocaproyl-phosphatidylethanolamine (DNP-cap-DPPE), and a monolayer containing the hapten-doped lipid was deposited on a poly(methyl methacrylate) cuvette by using the Langmuir-Blodgett technique.
    The fluorescence signal increased with the binding of the antibodies, and the initial binding rate was calculated from the slope of the fluorescence signal curve. The initial rate of binding of FITC-anti-DNP-IEE to the hapten on the lipid monolayer surface increased at a low surface density of haptens in the lipid monolayer, and leveled off at a moderate-to-high hapten density. The effect of the spacer length between the hapten group and the lipid layer on the binding rate was also examined. It is confirmed that a long spacer promoted the access of antibodies to the haptens.

    Chitosan/calcium carbonate core-shell type composite microparticles were fabricated via a biomineralization-inspired process with chitosan particles as starting materials. The obtained composite particles were spherical, and the diameter of the composite particles was larger than that of the chitosan particles. XRD measurement indicated that the shell of the composite particle had a crystalline structure. The shell fabrication process was carried out with polyacrylic acid (PAA) or polyglutamic acid (PGlu) as binder molecules between calcium carbonate and chitosan. The crystal form of the shell fabricated with PAA was calcite, which is the most stable form of calcium carbonate crystal. On the other hand, the shell fabricated with PGlu was composed mainly of vaterite crystal, which is not a stable form. Types of binder molecules influenced the crystal structure of the calcium carbonate shell. The drug release behavior of the model drug-introduced core-shell particles was evaluated in various pH conditions. It was revealed that the inorganic shell suppressed drug release and that the crystal form of the calcium carbonate shell affected the suppression of drug release. The core-shell particles prepared in this study are an environmentally friendly hybrid product consisting of inorganic and organic materials and could be used as a novel drug-carrying microcapsule.
