Odor environments in living spaces can influence human physiological and psychological states. To elucidate the effect of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) of wood in living spaces on the modulations of cognitive processing, we built two experimental huts to simulate wooden construction living spaces. One hut was made of cedarwood (Cryptomeria japonica), and the other was made of resin. We used cedarwood and resin, because they are often used as construction materials in Japan. In both huts, we measured the participants’ first positivity in the early visual cortex (P1), the third positivity elicited by voluntary attention (P3b), and the automatic occipital negativity to infrequent visual stimuli in event-related potentials (ERPs), while they performed a visual discrimination task. The VOCs in both huts were measured by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. The concentration of volatile sesquiterpenes was significantly increased in the cedarwood hut. Neither P1 nor P3b was affected by the cedarwood hut. Compared to the resin hut, we observed significantly larger occipital negativities to the infrequent stimuli in the cedarwood hut in the time windows of 280–300 ms at the mid-occipital region. These findings suggest that the increased concentration of volatile sesquiterpenes emitted from cedarwood facilitates the human brain’s response to changes in visual stimuli.

This study compared the participants’ physiological responses and subjective evaluations of air scented with different concentrations of common rush (Juncus effusus L. var. decipiens Buchen.) (30 g and 15 g, with fresh air as a control). We asked 20 participants to complete a series of visual discrimination tasks while inhaling two different air samples. We evaluated (1) brain activity, (2) autonomic nervous activity, and (3) blood pressure and pulse rate, (4) in combination with self-evaluation. In addition, we quantified the concentrations of volatile organic compounds. The participants reported the scent to be sour, pungent, and smelly; this impression was likely caused by hexanal and acetic acid. Although the self-evaluations showed that participants did not enjoy the scent, their alpha amplitudes of electroencephalogram and parasympathetic nervous activity were increased, suggesting that participants were relaxed in this atmosphere. Moreover, a lower concentration resulted in a greater induction of relaxation. While the air was not pleasant-smelling, the volatile organic compounds present had a positive psychophysiological impact.

© 2021 Japanese Society of Animal Science. Ludwigia grandiflora is an amphibious plant that has been designated as a specific alien plant in Japan. Due to the risk of regeneration on land, plants are burned after eradication. Since L. grandiflora is fertile and rich in biomass, this study investigated the use of L. grandiflora as a feed for ruminants. We measured general components, detergent fiber components, and in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) using rumen microbes for three forms (terrestrial form, emergent form, and floating-leaved form) of L. grandiflora. In addition, concentrations of hazardous metallic elements were also measured from the viewpoint of feed safety. Crude protein, neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber, and acid detergent lignin were contained 10.31-14.62, 27.83-42.28, 20.54-36.05, and 6.94-18.90 (%DM), respectively. IVDMD was 50.75%-68.24%. Toxic elements such as Pb, Cd, and Hg were not detected in all forms. These results suggest that L. grandiflora could be partially used as alternative roughage for ruminants.

© 2020, The Author(s). Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) wood is widely used as a traditional construction material in Japan. The relationship between an individual’s perceived comfort level and a preference for Japanese cedar wood interiors is of interest. We compared volunteers’ physiological responses and subjective evaluations of wooden dwelling spaces with different wood materials: planed Japanese cedar lumber, or printed grain resin sheet overlay boards. Eighty-three subjects were asked to stay in each room for 30 min. We evaluated salivary stress markers, blood pressure, the profile of mood states-brief form (POMS), and a questionnaire that used the semantic differential method to evaluate the subjects’ feeling state for both rooms. The concentrations of the volatile organic compounds in both rooms were also quantified after the experiment. The results demonstrated that the subjects’ evaluation of each room was highly dependent on their preference; each room was evaluated more positively by subjects who preferred it. Although the subjects’ feelings were also influenced by their preference, the room with Japanese cedar did not elicit negative feelings, even from the subjects who disliked it. The subjects’ physiological responses were totally independent of their preferences. Their blood pressure decreased in the Japanese cedar room, and their salivary alpha-amylase activity was repressed in both rooms. These results indicated that the subjective evaluations were influenced in part by the subjects’ preferences, while their physiological responses were not affected. Regardless of which room the subjects preferred, the Japanese cedar room reduced the subjects’ blood pressure compared to the room with artificial materials.

© 2020, University of Montenegro. All rights reserved. To investigate chemical uses of Moso bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescens) shoot skin, we identified the main component of non-polar solvent extracts. To this end, a white precipitate from n-hexane extracts was evaluated using silica-gel column chromatography. The fraction with the highest recovery showed a single spot in silica-gel thin-layer chromatography (TLC) analyses. In subsequent nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and electron impact-mass spectrometry (EI-MS) analyses, we identified the compound in the fraction as 1-triacontanol, which is a known regulator of plant growth. In addition, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) experiments showed 1-triacontanol concentrations of 13.3 and 41.7 ppm in fresh and boiled skins, respectively. In boiled skins, 1-triacontanol concentrations reached a maximum of 71.3 ppm after 2 weeks of composting. Although concentrations gradually decreased thereafter, they remained at 19.7 ppm after compost maturation for 6 months. In a further experiment, seeds of Welsh onion were sown on absorbent cotton impregnated with authentic 1-triacontanol solutions, significant increase in hypocotyl length was observed. Due to the presence of 1-triacontanol, Moso bamboo shoot skin has potential as functional compost that promotes plant growth for agricultural uses.

© 2019 Elsevier B.V. In order to discover new anti-obesity agents, twenty two natural extracts from medicinal plants and agricultural wastes were screened by pancreatic lipase inhibition assay. The methanolic extract of poplar wood (Populus alba L.), an important raw material for paper industry, showed promising inhibitory activity, its IC50 value was 7.15 μg/mL. Through bio-guided fractionation, the ethyl acetate fraction (E) was found to be the major contributor to the activity, IC50 = 4.7 μg/mL. Hence, it was subjected to bio-guided isolation and nine compounds (1–9) were identified from the active sub-fractions. The isolates were identified by means of one- and two-dimensional nuclear magnetic spectroscopy (1D, 2D-NMR), as well as high-performance liquid chromatography quadrupole time-of flight mass spectrometry (HPLC-QTOF-MS). (+)-Taxifolin (5) and (+)-ampelopsin (4) showed the highest activity, their IC50 values were 23.2 and 46.2 μM, respectively. The results indicated that flavonoids and phenolic acids in poplar wood could serve as potential candidates for development of new anti-obesity agents.

© The Author(s) 2019 This study investigated in vitro the α-glucosidase inhibitory activity of resin from the Sakhalin fir tree (Abies sachalinensis). The resin showed extremely high activity (IC50 of 17.3 µg/mL). We isolated 8 compounds from the resin and identified them. All of the compounds isolated from A. sachalinensis resin are reported for the first time in the present study. In an α-glucosidase inhibitory assay, 6 compounds-(holophyllane C (1), (−)-(24E)-23-oxo-3,4-seco-9βH-lanosta-4(28),6,8(14),24-tetraen-3,26-dioic acid (2), abiesonic acid (3), (−)-(24E)-23-oxo-3,4-seco-9βH-lanosta-4(28),7,24-triene-3,26-dioic acid (4), 3,4-seco-4(28),6,8(14),22Z,24-mariesapentaen-26,23-olide-3-oic acid (5), and (−)-abiesonic acid 3-methyl ester (6))-showed high activity (their IC50 values were 25.1, 20.9, 82.4, 20.5, 27.3, and 20.5 µg/mL, respectively). These compounds should contribute to the resin's α-glucosidase inhibitory activity. From an industrial point of view, these findings provide new data to support that the resin of A. sachalinensis is a rich source of α-glucosidase inhibitors, which are highly valuable for their potential to be developed as functional health foods.

©, Copyright © Taylor & Francis Group, LLC. This article describes the biological activities of heartwood extracts from Yakushima native cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) and identifies their main active compounds. Black heartwood and red heartwood were each divided into two parts from the center (the pith) to outer heartwood (the cambium). The methanol extracts of those parts were screened for antioxidant and anti-lipase activities. The extract from the pith of the red heartwood showed the highest ORAC activity among the samples. Regarding anti-lipase activity, all the extracts showed relatively high activity (the IC 50 value were 9.71–37.24 μg mL −1 ). In addition, four compounds were isolated and identified from the pith of red heartwood by NMR and MS analyses. Agatharesinol (3) and sequirin C (4) were thought to be the main active compounds responsible for the antioxidant and anti-lipase activities.
