In this paper, based on drawings, we examined the spatial transformation of Hagi Clan's principle estate in the city of Edo by focusing on entrance spaces. Basically the spatial composition of the estate was transformed drastically just in the Meireki era and did not change until the end of the Edo period despite several reconstructions. But the transformation of entrance spaces both in the omote-goten and the ura-goten appeared more frequently. It is significant that although originally the ura-goten had started as feminine and dependent space, it developed into an independent space equipped with its own entrance and reception space.

In the 16th to 17th century, there appeared the Sankai-gura, three-storied slim shape plastered storehouse (Dozo), in the city illustrations. A detailed comparative study of those illustrations revealed a similarity on roof structure between plastered storehouses, town houses and also early modern age castles. As I studied the plastered storehouse development, the Sankai-gura was evolved from interior store rooms in townhouses to independent exterior structures. This independence became one of a force to modify the city planning in middle age to early modern age.

This paper examines the construction management of a daimyo mansion in the city of Edo, based upon the analysis of Hagi clan's record that describes the reconstruction of shikidai building from 1748 to 1749. The shikidai building was composed of three parts and the specification of building part was different from each other. The construction system of several types were selected according to the characteristics of each part and combined to execute. Generally the more important the building part was, the more deeply Hagi clan's management team got involved in the construction in order to keep the quality of building.

The four folding screens illustrated around Shuri and Naha in the Early Modern Age have two types of traditional dwelling, Nukiya and Anaya, distinctive of Okinawa prefecture. Special perspective is applied to these screens. We can easily distinguish Nukiya and Anaya on these screens according to their characteristics and illustrated areas. Nukiya may derive from the detached palace or the samurai residences. But the difference in city planning between Ryukyu Dinasty and Edo, Japan may suggest the original evolution of Nukiya.

Urasoe Yodore is known as the oldest imperial mausoleum of the Ryukyu Dynasty. The mausoleum has two tombs, "King Shonei's tomb" and "King Eiso's tomb". There are stone coffins, sculptured in the form of buildings. From analysis of the architectural sculpture on the stone coffins, they can be dated to around the Kamakura period. The coffins are sculptured in the form of the interior of a hall of Buddhist stupa or temple. The construction of Urasoe Yodore is divided into 3 periods. Architectural characteristics appeared on the coffins show influences from China, Korea and Japan.

An interdisciplinary research organization of researchers has attempted to elucidate how the samurai residence districts in Edo matured during the middle and late modern period, focusing on the both scales of architecture and city. The process of maturation of the Edo daimyo's mansions, which consisted of the "goten space" for the feudal lord and his family and the "tsumenin space" for vassals and others, was described as follows: (1) In the goten space, gardens and other facilities were developed not only in shimo-yashiki but also in the kami-yashiki, and the houses of wives of former feudal lords and the Shogun's daughters became independent; (2) In the tsumenin space, the number of inner row houses and shrines in the house increased and it became independent and was enhanced; and (3) As a result of these developments, each residence became larger in scale, and it is likely that the number of aitaigae, kakaeyashiki and kakaechi increased in order to adjust them at the urban level.

This research examined both the spatial change of the whole residential area of samurai warriors and the changes of mansions of warriors in Edo, including the changes of architectural composition, and also analyzed the factors of the changes such as A the urban policies of Tokugawa government, B the surrounding societies of the mansions and C the dwelling styles of warriors. As for the analysis of whole spatial change, this research made the format of GIS database that integrates spatial data and owner data and input the data of warriors’ mansions into the format partially. The data set were gathered from the maps of “Gofunai Enkaku Zusho” compiled in the 19th century by the Tokugawa government.
